The U.S. Envoy and Ambassador

Who they are: The U.S. officials making the visit are President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, and the U.S. Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee.

Purpose of the visit:

The White House has stated that the officials are traveling to Gaza to "inspect the current (aid) distribution sites and secure a plan to deliver more food and meet with local Gazans to hear firsthand about this dire situation on the ground." This on-the-ground inspection is seen as a way to gather direct information and bypass reports that have been contradicted by Israeli officials.

Meetings and briefing:

Prior to entering Gaza, Witkoff and Huckabee met with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and other officials. Following their Gaza visit, they will brief the President to approve a "final plan for food and aid distribution."

The Humanitarian Crisis and International Reaction

Mounting pressure: The visit is a direct result of mounting international pressure on Israel over the humanitarian situation. Multiple international organizations, as well as countries like the UK, France, and Canada, have criticized Israel's actions and the airdrops of food aid, which have led to stampedes and skirmishes.

Accusations of a starvation policy:

International bodies and many world leaders have accused Israel of a "starvation policy" in Gaza. The UN has warned for months that the Israeli military blockade on humanitarian relief has pushed Gaza to the brink of famine, a situation it now says is "unfolding."

Contradictory statements:

President Trump has publicly contradicted Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu's claims that there is "no starvation" in Gaza, saying that there is "real starvation" and citing images of emaciated children. This has been a notable break from the public messaging of a close ally.

The role of aid organizations:

Aid organizations have expressed frustration with the current situation. The UN has said that Israel's actions have led to a breakdown in governance and have made aid distribution dangerous. It has also refused to cooperate with the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF), an Israeli-backed American contractor that has set up its own food distribution sites, citing concerns about humanitarian principles and the safety of Palestinians.

The Proposed "New Plan"

Partnership with Israel: President Trump has said that the U.S. will partner with Israel to run new food centers in Gaza, with Israel presiding over them to ensure "proper" distribution. However, details of this plan remain scant and appear similar to the existing GHF program, which has been criticized for being dangerous and for operating in areas off-limits to independent media.

Criticism of the plan:

The proposed plan has been met with skepticism. Some U.S. senators have urged the Trump administration to cease funding for the GHF and instead resume support for UN-led aid coordination mechanisms. Critics argue that relying on Israel to manage the aid distribution it is accused of obstructing is a flawed approach.

The visit by Witkoff and Huckabee is a direct response to a complex and urgent crisis. It reflects a growing divergence in the U.S. and Israeli public positions on the severity of the humanitarian situation and an attempt by the U.S. to take a more direct role in addressing the crisis on the ground.
