Zanzibar's $400 Million Port Overhaul: A Bold Move to Become a Global Trade Powerhouse
In a landmark initiative set to redefine its economic future, Zanzibar is launching an ambitious $400 million port transformation project. This isn't just an upgrade; it's a strategic move to position the island as a major commercial hub and the primary gateway for international trade in the region. According to Akif Ali Khamis, Director General of the Zanzibar Ports Corporation, the goal is to revolutionize trade and enable direct cargo shipments from global economic centers within the next three years.
A Two-Port Strategy for Growth
The comprehensive plan focuses on two key ports: Fumba and Mangapwani. Each has a distinct role to play in the grand strategy.
- Fumba Port is being developed as the new primary import hub. It will be capable of handling up to 12,000 containers at a time and, with planned dredging, will see its annual capacity soar to 250,000 containers. Most impressively, it will begin receiving direct shipments from global powerhouses like China, Dubai, Turkey, and the UK, cutting down on transit times and costs.
- Mangapwani Port is set to become a vital regional cargo hub. Its infrastructure is being completed to handle fuel and gas imports, which were previously routed through Tanzania's Tanga Port. A massive one-kilometer berth will be constructed, capable of accommodating any size of vessel. Once fully operational after final testing, it is projected to reduce import costs by 20%, making Zanzibar's trade even more competitive.
Boosting Local Industry with a New Shipyard
In a move that will foster self-reliance, an additional $50 million will be invested to establish an international shipyard at Mangapwani. This facility is a game-changer for Zanzibar’s maritime industry. For the first time, it will enable local shipbuilding and maintenance, eliminating the need for local vessel owners to travel all the way to Kenya for repairs. This will not only cut costs but also create skilled jobs and ignite a new era of growth for the local economy.
Zanzibar's port project is a clear declaration of its intent to be a key player in the global logistics chain. It is a bold investment in its infrastructure and its people, promising a future of prosperity and strategic importance.
