Uganda's Oil Dream Nears Reality as Kingfisher Project Reaches Final Stages
Uganda's long-awaited journey to becoming an oil producer is reaching a critical point with the Kingfisher oil project now nearing completion. The project, operated by a Chinese company, has made significant progress and is now 95% finished, well ahead of schedule.
According to project officials, 15 oil wells are already prepared to begin production. The remaining final step is obtaining the official green light from the Ugandan government, which is expected soon. The project's operator, China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC), is ready to begin production as soon as the license is granted.
Once operational, the Kingfisher site is expected to produce approximately 40,000 barrels of oil per day. This crude oil will be transported via a feeder pipeline to the main East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP), which will carry the resource across Tanzania to the port of Tanga for export.
This milestone is a significant step toward transforming Uganda's economy, promising new revenue streams and job creation. However, the country's full entry into the global oil market is contingent on the timely completion of the EACOP and the planned domestic refinery.
